5Luxuary portable mini speakers
By mbr8879576
I shopped around, then ended up with 4 (Actually 5) portable mini speakers for my MP3 players (ZEN, from Creative Lab). This is the most costly ($169), yet best sound volume and quality portable mini speakers. It is a bit heavy as compared with the others. It can be charged with a worldwide plug (and a mini USB port.) It has a volume control, It comes with a non-slip pad, it has an output port for a sub-woofer. An on off switch, a battery charging indicator light that changes color from red to green. It comes with a soft porch for carry.

The next sound volume and quality portable mini speakers is the discontinued Sony SRS-T57, the 4 AA battery compartment made it a bit bulky. It cost around $35 ?

The next sound volume and quality portable mini speakers is the Dino iSpeaker, with impressive spec, 50-20K Hz, 90 dB, small foot print, very cheap (Cost less than 10% of the Soundmatters), The sound volume and quality is good. It is a buy for the price.

The one I will not recommend is the one from Creative Lab, it fits only the Zen Mosaic model. It costs three times as the Dino iSpeaker, but the sound volume and quality is not good. I broke the shipping package, otherwise, I would return and ask for a refund.

The last one is a bulky and heavy, AM/FM radio, the Sangean PR-D5, It is a good FM/AM radio, but the sound from the aux input is not as loud as the radio. I will not recommend it for mp3 player.

In short, if you can afford the $169, get this Soundmatters speaker. Otherwize get the Dino iSpeaker (It may be model CS-SP25, developed by Cool Sources in Taiwan, made in China)

5Big Sound, Small Package
By James S. Leseke
I read about these beauties in boing-boing and the was interested. For the money these speakers are absolutely amazing. Huge sound, with amazing clarity and excellent base response. I Actually had to dial back these tiny terrors because they were too loud.

At full throttle the base was muddy and tubby and really, really loud. The amount of punch delivered by the unit is astounding. In more normal operating conditions the speakers are near flawless. The base is full and punchy, the midrange is clean, and the highs are super-crisp and not a bit tinny.
Soundmatters foxLv2
As my FOXL spends almost all of its time tethered to a MacBook, battery life is not a concern. The FOXL happily sucks down USB power from the Mac. I have noted that there is a buzz from the unit when operated in this manner. How the DC voltage from the USB is causing a hum is bit of a mystery that is solved by just unplugging the unit from the USB hub. It may not be the fault of the unit but of the macally 7 port hub I use.

Bottom line I cannot praise the FOXL enough. If music matters to you and you need a high quality portable rig to play your tunes, go no father, this is your unit.

Best Bluetooth Speakers in 2011

Another year, and another range of speakers released by a slew of manufacturers. But there's a difference this year: namely, the extensive line up of bluetooth speakers. While true audiophiles will probably shriek in horror at the mere mention of wireless speakers (wires, after all, do deliver better performance, even if you can't spot it), for most consumers, these wireless speakers - particularly bluetooth speakers - are more than good enough to replace the old, cumbersome, wired lot. Add to that the ubiquity of iPhones and iPod Touches, and you can see the appeal in bluetooth speakers: they are easy to use, affordable, compact, and deliver a decent overall performance without any of the nasty bits (read: wires, hefty power bricks, etc.).

So, which are the best Bluetoot speakers for 2011?

If I had to pick out one set of speakers that stand out for their versitility, I would probably choose the Creative D100 and its elder sibling, the D200. These two speakers do everything right for me: deliver a good performance, aren't too expensive (I say this after burning thousands of dollars on various speaker sets), and look good. But for the sake of this article, I will list out the four best Bluetooth speakers in 2011:

Best Bluetooth Speakers in 2011

1. Creative D100 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

As I've mentioned above, this speaker set does a lot of things right: good looks (it comes in five different colors, though I prefer the default black), delivers a more than adequate performance, is small and easy to carry, works on AA batteries, and won't burn a hole in your wallet.

But it isn't a perfect speaker. Not by a long stretch (for that, I would probably look at Klipsch or Bose). The low end lacks a bit of punch, and if you turn up the volume, there is distortion. I assume, however, that you won't be using the Creative D100 to power your next house party. For every other purpose, this is a great, dependable speaker.

Pros: compact design, affordable, aesthetically pleasing, strong overall performance.

Cons: Bass sounds a bit weak; distortions at high volume

2. Monster ClarityHD Precision Micro Bluetooth Speaker

With this speaker, there was love at first sight. How can you not fall for this tiny package bursting with features and power? It is no bigger than an iPhone in length, and yet, can set the house on fire with its sound. I've seen speakers that weight 10 lbs that don't perform as good.

Compact design notwithstanding, the Monster ClarityHD is a very well rounded speaker that works seamlessly with any Bluetooth device. Your iPhone or iPodTouch will recognize it instantly and stream all music through it. The audio quality is amazing for such a small speaker - clear, strong mid and high tones, little distortion, even at high volumes. If you listen to music largely through your smartphone (Android/iPhone/Blackberry) or iPod Touch, this speaker is the perfect choice.

Pros: Extremely compact design, clear, strong playback, decent range.

Cons: As with all small speakers, lacks strong low tones. Volume output is somewhat low.

3. Altec Lansing inMotion Soundblade Bluetooth Speaker

Finally, a speaker that dispels the myth that Bluetooth speakers are only good for casual users. It costs a pretty penny, but turn it on, and you will get crystal clear sound with amazing bass (thanks to SRS TruBass technology) that will blow your socks off. It looks classy, is just an inch thick, and even includes an in-built microphone to act as a speakerphone.

Being a modern Bluetooth device, the Altec Lansing inMotion is a breeze to setup. You can go from opening the package to streaming music through your iPhone in as little as 60 seconds. The performance is, quite frankly, mindblowing. It delivers sound that can compete with a 0 Bose system, and for all practical purposes, it is more than adequate for some heavy use, both in the house and beyond.

The only downside that I can think of (which has made me rank it here at no.3) is the price. At 9.99, it costs as much as a new Netbook computer. But if you care about quality, you will love the Altec Lansing Soundblade.

Pros: Excellent audio quality, aesthetically pleasing, just an inch thick, strong bass and clear high tones. Probably the best Bluetooth speaker around.

Cons: Expensive

4. SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Speaker

It looks like a brick, is almost a footlong, and doesn't quite have the pedigree of an Altec Lansing behind it. But turn it on, and the SuperTooth Disco can give even a 0 Klipsch speaker a run for its money. The audio is surprisingly clear with strong volume output. Pairing it with a Bluetooth device is a matter of seconds, and it has a great Bluetooth range to boot.

On the downside, the large size makes it a bit difficult to carry around. While the Monster ClarityHD can be dropped into a handbag, the SuperTooth Disco does lack a bit of teeth in the portability department. But if you want to use it primarily indoors, you will be very happy with the performance.

Pros: Strong performance, good Bluetooth range

Cons: Big and unwieldy design

Different Types of Car Speakers - Coaxial Speakers, Component System, And Cone Material

There are different types of speakers out on the market today. Finding out what you exactly need may save you some money, but more significantly, improve the sound system of your car. Read on to learn more about the different types of car speakers available to you!

Coaxial Speakers

This type of speakers is the most common. Factory installed audio system usually install at least two pairs of this type in new vehicles. It's basically a midrange cone woofer with at least one tweeter mounted right on top of it. The result is a low to midrange sound reproduction from the midwoofer, as well as having high frequency reproduction from the tweeter.

Different Types of Car Speakers - Coaxial Speakers, Component System, And Cone Material

Older cars usually only have the midwoofer without the tweeter attached to it. As car makers realize the significance of car audio within the last couple of decades, they improved factory-installed systems with coaxial speakers. Don't be fooled by car makers today who say their car features a 6-piece speaker system because the four speakers are generally midrange woofers, with speakers 5 and 6 being simply detached tweeters. Unless it is configured as a component system (explained below), comes with a factory-installed amplifier or subwoofer, you could not call that 6-piece system premium audio; and therefore you should not pay extra for something you would otherwise already have.

Additionally, coaxial speakers are normally described as 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, etc. speakers. Simplistically speaking, a two-way is one woofer with one tweeter attached to it. A 3-way adds another tweeter, and so on and so forth. You may ask why is it that it even needs a tweeter and to that I will explain.

A typical non-tweeter speaker will pick up around 15-10000 Hz (remember low frequency means more bass). Regular source units like CD players put out a full range sound, like everyday noise that you hear from 20-20000 Hz. Without tweeters, your system will attempt to reproduce that missing 10000 Hz with something it physically can't do. The result would be not only a missing high-frequency sound but also additional distortion or degradation to the overall sound quality of your system.

Tweeters allow your system to reproduce the otherwise impossible sound, giving you a much clearer and defined sound quality. Any additional tweeter adds more detail to the sound as it hones in on a particular range.

Component Speaker System

A component system typically includes midrange woofers, separate tweeters, and crossover filter networks. What is explained above concerning midwoofers and tweeters apply the same as component systems. The only difference, as you may have noticed, is the separate tweeters. It would function the same exact way as the coaxially mounted tweeters, except for the crossover filter networks.

These filters improve sound quality significantly by channeling only audio signals the different components could physically handle. For instance it would channel only high-frequency signals (10000-20000 Hz) to the tweeters and the lower frequencies (25-10000 Hz) to the midwoofers. The result is an even better sound quality because each component is not given signals that they could not physically reproduce.

Component systems tend to be significantly more pricey but with much improved sound reproduction. Additionally, you generally will not find 3 or more way component systems because it is unnecessary, thanks to the filter. This is why I said that factory installed audio systems would only be premium if a crossover network is present.

Cone and Surround Material

The material of the woofer or the tweeter plays a significant role primarily in their longevity. Sound quality is only as good as the entire construction (i.e. voice coil type, magnet size, etc.). Though denser cones (Kevlar, glass fiber, polypropylene) tend to produce better sound quality than thinner materials (cloth, paper), understand that it takes the whole construction to produce great sound so don't dismiss a set of speakers just because it has thinner cone material. Heavier or denser cone materials last longer, especially helpful with constant high-power outputs.

Just like cone material, surround material plays a significant role in the longevity of your speakers as well. In its most simple explanation, a cone must move up and down as it produces sound. Think of your speaker as a trampoline, with the center elastic material of the cone and the springs on the edges as your surround. The surround must be tough and be able to stretch a little bit. Once again, denser material would do much better as thinner material tend to fray and degrade over time. Most lower-end car audio speakers have foam as the surround material, but these tend to harden and crack after temperature changes-which occurs in your car in the summer and winter with heater or air conditioning (especially under direct sunlight).

Wireless Computer Speakers - Buying Guide

If you are not really altogether certain what you're shopping for, below is some fundamental data on speaker features and the most typical varieties of wireless computer speaker designs.

2.0/2.1, 5.1, 7.1

These are the most common speaker set ups. The number pertains to the quantity of speakers in the arrangement. 2.0 - 2 satellite speakers, 2.1 - 2 satellite speakers and 1 subwoofer, 5.1 - 5 satellite speakers and 1 subwoofer, etc. The satellite speakers will play the full selection of audio frequency. While the sub will just play the low range, or bass, frequency. This is precisely why the sub is given the ".1" designation.

Wireless Computer Speakers - Buying Guide

2 speaker set ups, having or with out a sub, are possibly a suitable improvement for many people today. For people who largely merely watch the periodic online video, or listen to music while doing work, this is the way to go. It will produce a pleasant enhancement in audio quality and is also the lowest priced solution. 5.1 and 7.1 surround set ups are for people who genuinely appreciate high quality audio. If your personal computer is the primary media player for your home, or office, this would also be a perfect option. If you watch a lot of movies, play games, or want to have music in numerous rooms, you'll want to check out the 5.1 and 7.1 speaker reviews for the greatest package.

USB or Bluetooth

Whenever it comes to wireless computer speakers, presently there are at the moment 2 possibilities for transmitting the signal from your computer to the speakers, Rf USB and Bluetooth. Each are really easy to use, but some computers could possibly not be Bluetooth compatible. Most new desk top computers and laptops are, but it's one thing that ought to be looked at prior to getting new wireless speakers. Both transmitters will be something, commonly simply a tiny drive, that will plug in a USB port on your computer. With a Bluetooth transmitter, the signal is not going to be impacted by obstacles such as walls or furniture. With a standard RF USB transmitter this may reduce the sound quality. Typically with Bluetooth the range is also a lot larger permitting you to position your speakers outside if you like.

Infinity Marine Speakers - A Brief Overview

Infinity marine speakers are among some of the company's best offerings. Founded in 1968, Infinity is a well-known brand for automotive audio equipment, loved and respected by casual users and audiophiles alike. In fact, Infinity is the official audio partner of automotive brands like Hyundai and several cars in the Chrysler stable. Besides making speakers and audio equipment for cars, Infinity also produces an entire range of audio devices for boats. Infinity marine speakers are typically affordable, deliver great performance, and can withstand the elements as any good marine speakers should.

When buying marine speakers, the most important thing you should look for is durability. While any speakers can work well on a boat (though a boat's shape and design offers slightly different acoustical challenges than a car), the constant exposure to water and the sun makes it imperative that the speakers be water and weather resistant to a high degree. Also, when buying speakers, always take any specification with a pinch of salt. For instance, most buyers tend to go by the number of watts offered by a system, which is essentially a useless number unless the speaker can actually deliver clear audio and render a large range of frequencies. A 500 watt speaker will not necessarily be better than a 100 watt speaker. Always pay attention to the actual performance, not specifications.

The range of Infinity marine speakers starts off with the extremely popular Infinity Reference 612m, 6.5-inch 225 watt 2-way marine speaker. This model isn't priced low - it will set you back by at least 0 - but it delivers an impressive performance that combines the best of awesome power with crystal clear clarity. The Infinity 612m features polypropylene woofer cones that are not only lightweight but also completely sealed for marine use. The rubber surrounds are treated to be UV-resistant, which means you can keep these speakers out in the sun for hours without any risk of damage. The 1-1/4" polypropylene semi-dome tweeter reproduces crystal clear sound, while the speaker itself is specially designed to be moisture resistant. The cast polymer basket that houses the speakers is corrosion proof and will withstand a high degree of salt, water, and UV damage.

Infinity Marine Speakers - A Brief Overview

In terms of real world performance, the Infinity series has long been the choice of audiophiles and lay customers alike who want to replace their car/boat's factory fitted speakers. The audio reproduced is crystal clear; there even the bass reproduction is admirable. At 225 watt, you get plenty of power for low frequencies as well. The Infinity 612m comes highly recommended and is great for use in boats of all shapes and sizes.

Another option in the Infinity marine speakers range are Infinity Reference 6912m 6x9-inch 105 watt marine speakers. Priced much lower than the 612m, the 6912m has lower power but does not compromise on quality. The audio reproduction is still top-notch, and the speakers are more than capable of handling a wide range of frequencies. Like the 612m, these speakers are water and UV resistant to a high degree. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the 612m, then the 6912m would be perfect for your boat.

Other Infinity marine speakers include the Wakeboard 6000m 150-watt tower speaker system, which is terribly expensive at over 0, but delivers an unparalleled performance.

How to Select Car Audio Speakers

Installing a new set of car audio speakers should be a very simple upgrade for any car sound system. In most cases it will be a simple job of matching the size, power and resistance (OHMS) of your OEM speakers. Just don't fall into the trap of attempting to increase the size of your speakers expecting better quality and louder sound. This is a common error which simply isn't the best way to go.

The first point to consider is the suggested power requirements of whatever speakers you might desire. The best way to compare car audio speakers is to compare the continuous power or RMS of the speakers. You will have to check your vehicles sound system to determine if there is an amplifier or just the source unit powering your speakers. Most OEM premium sound systems have an amplifier incorporated in their setup. You might want to consult your car dealer or a local custom shop to check on this.

Most entry level speakers from the better brands will perform perfectly just being driven by the source unit. But if you are going to invest in high quality car audio speakers, you should really consider installing a power amplifier. No matter which way you decide to go, you will find that just about any aftermarket car audio speaker will out perform OEM installed speakers.

How to Select Car Audio Speakers

The next thing to consider is finding the correct size speakers for your specific vehicle. There is only one way to ensure you purchase the correct size and that is to pop-off the door panel and actually measure the mounting diameter and the mounting depth of the current speakers. This isn't too difficult to do and since you will probably want to install your new speakers yourself, the door panel will have to be removed anyway. Be sure to lower your window inside the door and measure the available depth. Many times you will find newer replacement speakers will require a bit more depth then original equipment speakers. But today, many manufacturers are producing shallow mount speakers for even the most difficult installations.

Many car and truck owners opt to move their new speakers from the usual door locations. Doing this also widens your choice of brand and size speakers. There are high quality kick panel replacements which allow the car owner to install his new speakers in the kick panel location. This changes the "sound stage" considerably, thus increasing the sound quality that you and your passengers will enjoy.

Installing car audio speakers is not the most challenging job in upgrading a car sound system. Most people who can follow 'step by step' instructions and have a bit of patience will find installing new speakers is quite easy. There are speaker installation videos on the web which will give you some great ideas on how to proceed.

Through the years I've learned that upgrading speakers will provide you with the most benefit for the dollar spent. New speakers can make a world of difference in your enjoyment level of your favorite tunes. But remember one basic truth; you get what you pay for. Do not expect a set of coaxial speakers to sound as good as a 0 component speaker set. Shopping online is the only way to go. You can literally save hundreds of dollars over shopping at a local custom sound shop. So go for it and upgrade your car or truck's speakers and you won't be sorry.
