5Luxuary portable mini speakers
By mbr8879576
I shopped around, then ended up with 4 (Actually 5) portable mini speakers for my MP3 players (ZEN, from Creative Lab). This is the most costly ($169), yet best sound volume and quality portable mini speakers. It is a bit heavy as compared with the others. It can be charged with a worldwide plug (and a mini USB port.) It has a volume control, It comes with a non-slip pad, it has an output port for a sub-woofer. An on off switch, a battery charging indicator light that changes color from red to green. It comes with a soft porch for carry.

The next sound volume and quality portable mini speakers is the discontinued Sony SRS-T57, the 4 AA battery compartment made it a bit bulky. It cost around $35 ?

The next sound volume and quality portable mini speakers is the Dino iSpeaker, with impressive spec, 50-20K Hz, 90 dB, small foot print, very cheap (Cost less than 10% of the Soundmatters), The sound volume and quality is good. It is a buy for the price.

The one I will not recommend is the one from Creative Lab, it fits only the Zen Mosaic model. It costs three times as the Dino iSpeaker, but the sound volume and quality is not good. I broke the shipping package, otherwise, I would return and ask for a refund.

The last one is a bulky and heavy, AM/FM radio, the Sangean PR-D5, It is a good FM/AM radio, but the sound from the aux input is not as loud as the radio. I will not recommend it for mp3 player.

In short, if you can afford the $169, get this Soundmatters speaker. Otherwize get the Dino iSpeaker (It may be model CS-SP25, developed by Cool Sources in Taiwan, made in China)

5Big Sound, Small Package
By James S. Leseke
I read about these beauties in boing-boing and the was interested. For the money these speakers are absolutely amazing. Huge sound, with amazing clarity and excellent base response. I Actually had to dial back these tiny terrors because they were too loud.

At full throttle the base was muddy and tubby and really, really loud. The amount of punch delivered by the unit is astounding. In more normal operating conditions the speakers are near flawless. The base is full and punchy, the midrange is clean, and the highs are super-crisp and not a bit tinny.

As my FOXL spends almost all of its time tethered to a MacBook, battery life is not a concern. The FOXL happily sucks down USB power from the Mac. I have noted that there is a buzz from the unit when operated in this manner. How the DC voltage from the USB is causing a hum is bit of a mystery that is solved by just unplugging the unit from the USB hub. It may not be the fault of the unit but of the macally 7 port hub I use.

Bottom line I cannot praise the FOXL enough. If music matters to you and you need a high quality portable rig to play your tunes, go no father, this is your unit.

5Soundmatters FOXL kicks ass
By K. Bailey
These are very crisp sounding and extremely small but amaze people with how much bass they exert from their size.
Very happy with them.

5THE BEST PORTABLE SPEAKER-HANDS DOWN
By 3GOLDENS
These are without a doubt the best portable speaker system I have ever heard. Hands down far and above way ahead of the anything else on the market.
First I do not work for these people in case there is any doubt about the veracity of what I am saying here.

The speakers are extremely durable, rock sold construction and connect flawlessly to my iphone, my macbook pro, macbook, either by bluetooth or directly.
Soundmatters foxLv2
I don't know what the problem was with the other person who reviewed them and stated he had a problem, no such thing, these perform FLAWLESSLY, ACROSS THE BOARD!

I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. I am a old school audio person, if it sounds good to my naked ear then its AOK!
AND
These sound absolutely suburb, just really unbelievable. I can not tell you how long I have been waiting for something like this to come out that is portable and performs as stated in the information provided to consumers. Imagine, no wires, and great stereo sound and its a hands free device all rolled into one.

All I need now is for Sound Matters to come out with a powered portable subwoofer to go along with this little gem!
Soundmatters foxLv2
Really folks you will not be sorry worth every single cent! Do not hesitate if they are in stock ORDER THEM RIGHT AWAY!

P.S. Their Customer service is impeccable. I had a small problem and they shipped me a new speaker RIGHT AWAY.
I've been told they are working on a small portable subwoofer to go along with this unit and we should be seeing this soon!

4Best in Current Technology
By B. Safdie
Raves:
Soundmatters foxLv2 best
I have purchased at least a dozen small speaker systems over the years, spending anywhere from $20 to $150 each. The Soundmatters Foxl V2 speakers are by far the best of the lot. The sound is nicely balanced and has nice bass tones for a speaker system this small. I gave it a 4 stars for Sound quality because it certainly will distort at high volumes.

I am not sure that there any speaker system in this class that is a 5 star on Sound quality. In speakers, size matters, but Soundmatters has done a great job of optimizing the sound in this small package. This is nice, portable audio sound -- not snooty audiophile sound. If you are that much of an audiophile, then you really are not going to be happy outside of your soundproofed living room with your multi-thousand dollar stereo system, so what are you doing looking at these speakers anyway?
great Soundmatters foxLv2
On price, I have purchased iPod dock speakers costing well over $100 that had decent sound, but were much larger and less portable. The Foxl V2 has better sound and fits in my jeans back pocket. $200 may seem steep, but the incremental value in sound, portability, and convenience is definitely there for me. Paired with my HTC EVO, it is the ultimate roaming listening device. With the EVO in my pocket, I roam from room to room in my house doing chores and listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or music. I have a small deck on my condo and the sound is fine for party background music. Finally, they sound great plugged in to my laptop.

In addition to an "Anti-Dance Mat" (see below), Soundmatters provides a complete set of cables (USB, 3.5mm audio) and multiple power plugs that fit into the wall charger.

Not Quite Negatives:
good Soundmatters foxLv2
Note of caution: At high volume, these babies dance. My unit has a dent in the speaker grill where it danced off a table onto a stone floor. Use the rubber mat Soundmatters provides and make sure you keep the unit away from edges. I am not sure if this is a negative or a positive. On one hand, it is a pain. On the other hand, it is cool -- especially when showing the speakers to friends. With the volume a bit lower, this is not a problem.

Both supplying a wall-charger and accepting a mini-USB for charging is great. Although with cell phones standardizing around micro-USB, I think I would prefer a micro-USB port. I have micro-USB cables everywhere now (car, home, office), and have to search for the mini-USB cable. One cable for all would really have been nice.

niceSoundmatters foxLv2
Negatives:

First, the Bluetooth speaker phone capability is horrible. I hear callers perfectly. However, I have yet to talk to someone who did not complain that they could not hear me very well. I did not buy this product as a speaker phone, so I am affected less. In my book, if they could not get a better microphone (dual mics?) in the unit, they should have left this feature out.

My second negative is the battery. I get 5 or 6 hours on a 4-hour charge, and that is as advertised. I just wish it could be more in the 8 to 10 hour range. Finally, the battery is not user-changeable/replaceable. I would be happier if I could keep a second battery charging, or in my pack if I am out on the lake for a day. I also worried that the rechargeable battery would start to decline in a year or so. Soundmatters assured me that they expect the lifetime for the battery to be more on the order of 5 years. We'll see. I like the product enough that I hope to be using it in 5 years. All in all, I would prefer that the battery be user-replaceable, both to compensate for playtime-per-charge and eventual battery degradation.

Soundmatters foxLv2
Conclusion:

Overall, I recommend the Foxl V2. It's not perfect, but it is certainly the best portable speaker system current technology offers in this size.

4Pricy, and worth every penny
By Samuel Missimer
As a music-loving road-warrior, I have purchased many different portable speaker solutions over the years.

The FoxLv2 is simply the best.

The sound is clear and accurate. Volume is more that adequate for hotel room listening, and the small weight/size makes it easy to keep in the smallest of travel bags.

Bluetooth works fine, but can be 'buzzy', a direct cord yields best results.

Cell phone function isn't so hot though, and the call audio level and quality pales to the music function, hence 4 not 5 stars.

Still, if portablility and audio quality are your criteria, you will not regret this purchase.
